With gasoline prices topping $4 per gallon for 87 octane pretty much everywhere in the country right now, it seems like a good time for some tips on how to improve your fuel economy.

The purpose of the trip was to attend & cover the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show, I think it was their 10th year. BMW is the title sponsor, so there was a big BMW presence – both corporate and built bikes. Definitely heavy on Airheads, which is why I wanted to bring Daren Dortin – he does the Airhead 247 podcast. We both got a lot of content.

Have you priced motorcycle tires lately? Holy cow! I’d call it sticker shock, but it’s more than that—I’m calling it sticker bludgeoning instead. If you’re shopping for tires in March like I am, well, we picked just about the worst time to do it. By the time I finished digging into it, I realized two things: Why tires got so expensive and when the best time is to buy them if you don’t want to get hammered.

George showed me how to do the fork seals, which is shockingly easy once everything is apart. NOT EASY is getting the front brake caliper properly adjusted.

Big day working on the bike at George’s shop—no doubt one of the last I’ll have. Installing the new alternator was surprisingly easy and we got it right on the first try. I’m as stunned as anybody.

Another day for just running errands. It’s an excuse to get out on the bike. I took my wife to work in the car, came home, geared up. Bike started OK—not super easy on the first hit like the other morning when Scott was here, but not endless minutes of cranking it, either.

My latest problem cropped up in late February, on a chilly and overcast day when I was headed to my local dealer for a presentation and to meet up with a friend for lunch. I pushed the big GS outside and got my gear on. It struggled to start, but it started. When I got back from closing the shed door, it had stalled. “That’s weird,” I thought, and started it again. After letting it warm up for about a minute, I rode off.

Longest day on the bike so far, making plans for later in the year.
