Celebrating the Volunteers Who Drive Our Community

What started as a casual Saturday event at BMW of Denver quickly transformed into a celebration of service, volunteerism, and community spirit. Nearly 40 riders—enticed by delicious food, lively conversation, and the chance to reconnect with friends and bond over their love of two wheels—bustled around the dealership on an unseasonably warm February day. Few knew that this gathering included a closely-held surprise awaiting two dedicated MOA members, Jean Excell and Kandi Spangler. Their years of commitment have significantly influenced the organization and in a delightful turn of events, both honorees were unaware that they would be receiving awards.

The afternoon event opened with a focus on the extensive BMW riding network, underscoring its importance to the community. Kandi Spangler kicked off the proceedings by welcoming and introducing members of the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado, which was established in 1972. The club’s activities include regular rides and social gatherings, offering members a consistent opportunity to connect and share their passion for motorcycling. One of the club’s signature events is the annual Top of the Rockies Rally held in Paonia. This rally attracts as many as 900 riders each year, providing participants with the chance to experience scenic high-country routes, enjoy live music, and foster camaraderie among fellow riders.

Members of the Colorado GS Girls were also well represented at this event. Bex Arden founded the group in 2013 to provide support, skill development, confidence and chance for women to ride together and expand their social circle in the moto community. Unlike many other clubs, the Colorado GS Girls have no dues, no bylaws, and no requirement to own a GS motorcycle—or even to live in Colorado! This welcoming approach has allowed their membership to extend beyond state borders, with members scattered throughout the world. The group’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment is testament to its longevity and success.

Education and involvement were central themes throughout the afternoon, highlighted by both Jean Excell and Kandi Spangler’s commitment to empowering riders. Their shared passion for the BMW motorcycle community was evident as they encouraged attendees to take advantage of training opportunities and become more deeply involved in club activities. Attendees learned about the rider training programs available at The F.A.R.M., a woman-owned facility in Colorado dedicated to enhancing motorcycle skills and safety. This facility offers specialized off-road courses by professional trainers aimed at helping riders build confidence, improve technique, and get ready for adventures beyond the pavement.

The Paul B. Rider Safety Training Rebate was also discussed; it provides valuable financial support to anyone seeking to advance their riding education. This initiative offers reimbursement of up to $200 for MOA members and up to $100 for non-member for approved training, making skill development more accessible and encouraging ongoing learning within the community.

Finally, the group received information about the upcoming BMW MOA National Rally, scheduled to take place in Essex Junction, Vermont, from June 11-13, 2026. Members were encouraged to register and attend this annual event, which promises opportunities for camaraderie, further education, scenic rides, and engagement with other riders.

Jean Excell took a moment to emphasize the vital role that volunteering plays within the BMW MOA community and that volunteers were a contributing factor to the success of the rallies. This was a perfect segue to reveal the first surprise of the event. She highlighted the Ambassador Program, which honors members for their exceptional service to the organization, including its charter clubs and individual members. Ambassadors are appointed by the MOA’s Board of Directors, reflecting the value placed on those who consistently go above and beyond in their support.

Jean informed the crowd that she was pleased to announce that Ambassador status would be presented to one of the members of the Colorado GS Girls. She noted that the recipient, Kandi Spangler, has generously contributed her time by writing articles and providing training sessions at the rallies. Jean concluded by formally awarding the Certificate of Ambassadorship distinction to Kandi Spangler, recognizing her dedication and service to the community.

Clearly taken by surprise, Kandi Spangler expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the community as she was presented with the Ambassador flag and certificate. “This is a huge honor,” she remarked, acknowledging the recognition bestowed upon her. Spangler emphasized that the strength and very existence of the community are rooted in the dedication of its volunteers. She highlighted the true significance of the certificate, noting that it symbolizes appreciation for all those individuals who selflessly give their time and energy to support and contribute to the organization simply because it holds great meaning for them. “Next time you see a volunteer, thank them for their dedication, for their sacrifice, and for doing something so selflessly because they simply want to.”

Kandi Spangler then shifted the focus back to Jean Excell, to deliver the second surprise of the afternoon, acknowledging her remarkable dedication and involvement within the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America community. Spangler confirmed that Jean has attended every MOA rally since 2012, consistently bringing positivity and enthusiasm to each event. “She is always smiling, actively working, organizing, and supporting others, while demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities,” remarked Spangler.

Jean’s service record includes holding the positions of Vice President and Treasurer (2015-18), as well as serving as the Colorado Regional Coordinator (2023-24). Additionally, she is a prolific contributor to the community, having authored numerous BMW Owners News articles. Jean has played a significant role in expanding the organization, signing up countless new members to the BMW MOA and educating them about the Paul B program.

Jean is also recognized as one of the first members of the Colorado GS Girls, and together with her husband Perry, she continues to volunteer and support community initiatives. As a role model, mentor, and steadfast supporter, Jean embodies the spirit of volunteerism and community engagement. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Spangler concluded by announcing Jean Excell as the recipient of the BMW MOA Certificate of Ambassadorship award, celebrating her enduring impact and leadership.

Bex Arden presented Excell with a framed certificate from the MOA, recognizing her more than two decades of dedication to the motorcycle community. Bill McConnell from BMW of Denver praised her ability to inspire others, noting how she energizes those around her and brings a sense of unity to every event. McConnell concurred that this recognition is a fitting tribute to someone truly deserving.

The central theme of the afternoon was unmistakable: The BMW community’s strength comes from its dedicated volunteers who return year after year to support and uplift the organization.

Their commitment and passion are the foundation upon which this vibrant community thrives. As the event concluded, attendees were reminded about the upcoming BMW MOA Rally in Vermont, scheduled for June. To encourage participation, a special Valentine’s registration offer was announced—two people can register for the rally at a discounted rate of $179. This offer is until February 28, 2026.
