{"id":8885,"date":"2025-11-19T09:32:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T14:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bmwmoa.org\/?p=8885"},"modified":"2025-11-19T09:32:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T14:32:35","slug":"machineartmotos-mudsling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bmwmoa.org\/machineartmotos-mudsling\/","title":{"rendered":"MachineArtMoto&#8217;s MudSling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You\u2019re probably already aware of New Jersey-based MachineArtMoto\u2019s ingeniously designed convertible handguards and svelte valve cover armor, but you may not know about another highly effective piece of kit they offer, <a href=\"https:\/\/machineartmoto.com\/search?q=mudsling&amp;options%5Bprefix%5D=last\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the MudSling<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar in concept to the extensions available for front fenders to increase protection from debris thrown up by the front tire, the MudSling creates a barrier between rear suspension components and the rear tire. On BMWs equipped with ESA, this extra shroud protects not only the Paralever and shock absorber, but also the black box full of related circuitry. This decreases the likelihood of damage, along with the amount of grime a meticulous owner must clean off parts that are often awkward to access. It also reduces the spray reaching the backs of the rider\u2019s legs. The MudSling provides additional coverage from the lower edge of the existing inner rear fender down to below the swingarm on modern R bikes \u2013 900, 1200, 1250 and 1300cc (R 1300 GS only; a GSA version is scheduled for release in early 2026). It makes use of a central stud extending through the stock fender, which is rendered a female fastener with the addition of a coupling hex nut. A cap screw then passes through the MudSling and into this threaded receptacle. The outer\/upper edges of the MudSling get secured to nearby subframe rails with two inconspicuous zip-ties on each side. That\u2019s it! The process is slightly different on 900 and 1300cc machines, but equally straightforward. A savvy observer will notice the MudSling\u2019s presence, but it calls no attention to itself and looks like the factory put it there. Actually, it seems odd the factory didn\u2019t. Why leave a big gap for that pricey shock and spring to get chipped by stone fragments and coated with gritty gunk whenever rain or puddles are encountered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For $103-$119 (depending on application), you can remedy the lack of OEM protection. Made of very sturdy black polypropylene with a texture that blends right in with the stock plastic, the MudSling is elegantly simple and delivers a valuable service for a modest price and just a few minutes of labor. The effort saved during cleaning alone justifies purchase, but it\u2019s also cheap insurance against what could be much more costly damage, whether resulting from an acute impact or the accelerated wear associated with chronic exposure to moisture and fine particulate matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> In the photo, I\u2019ve removed the muffler and right passenger footpeg hanger to more fully show the MudSling in place, but their removal isn\u2019t part of the installation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Ed.
